DIY is proud to reveal its involvement with a whole new live music 'experience' taking place in Glasgow next year. Rather than reel off a bunch of details ourselves, we're going to leave it to the press release...April 2009 will see a brand new arts and music event the likes of which has never been seen in Glasgow before. Hinterland is the brainchild of Mike Oman. Mike, a Glasgow Caledonian alumni and renowned DJ, runs the Hippocampus club night and has shared stages with the Chemical Brothers, Klaxons, Hot Chip and Trevor Jackson and DJ’d at events and clubs including Bestival, Pacha, Sub Club (Glasgow) and the Notting Hill Carnival.
Hinterland’s primary aim is to showcase established and upcoming Scottish talent – as well as some of the UK’s best emerging and established talent – across 20 art and music venues in Glasgow.
About 50% of all participants in Hinterland will be Scottish and the Hinterland Committee will advise upon the event line-up.
The Hinterland Committee is made up of key music personalities and companies from around the UK. Scottish committee members include Jim Gellatly (BBC Radio Scotland), Tam Coyle (Scottish DJ/promoter), Glasgow School of Art and Diverse Promotions - an independent Scottish based promotions company.
Other committee members include Gigwise, 1965 Records, Moshi Moshi, This is Fake DIY (that's us - Ed), Rock-A-Rolla Magazine, A Badge of Friendship, Deadly People/This Is Not London and Republic of Music.
Mike Oman, Hinterland organiser said: “Scottish people are driven by art, music and fashion. Glasgow provides the ideal backdrop for a one-ticket multi venue event like Hinterland. This will be the first time an event of this structure and on this scale has been held in Glasgow. There will be two days of art and music that will allow people to really experience the level of established and underground talent that Scotland, and the UK, has to offer.
The city has a rich heritage and history in the fields of both art and music. At the turn of the century Glasgow’s very own Charles Rennie Mackintosh – who was the UK’s leading exponent of the Art Nouveau movement – developed what is now commonly known in the art world as the ‘Glasgow’ style. In the world of music the city has also nurtured numerous world-recognised bands and musicians including Simple Minds, Wet Wet Wet, AC/DC’s Angus and Malcolm Young and more recently bands like Glasvegas and Biffy Clyro.”
The event will take place on April 30th and May 1st 2009. Hinterland will be the first one ticket multi-venue all access event ever of this kind to be held in Glasgow. The model means that people buy a ticket to Hinterland and that ticket grants them access to any of the venues/events that are part of Hinterland. This one ticket all-access event model has worked successfully in other UK cities with events like Stag & Dagger, Concrete & Glass and The Camden Crawl. Hinterland hopes to attract in the region of 10,000 music and art lovers over its two days.
The music that will form Hinterland’s bill will be from many musical genres including indie, electro, rock and hip-hop. All of the acts playing Hinterland will be credible and unique in their own right and will range from big-name established bands to smaller unknown breakthrough artists.
Hinterland’s music events will be staged in around 12 city centre venues that will range from smaller intimate 100 capacity venues to larger 1500 capacity spaces. Bands will run from 7-11pm and will be followed by DJ sets and guest appearances in clubs running into the early hours on both days.
