iTunes Goes Social With Ping, But Is There A Point? Apple has revealed a new music based social network.

Ping, which comes as part of the new iTunes 10, brings social elements to the app for the first time. It will also be built into the next version of iOS4 for iPhone and iPod touch.

Users create a profile through the iTunes store, selecting genres of music they like, and are able to share favourite songs, follow artists and friends, post updates, comment and show purchases. They will also get gig recommendations from Live Nation.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs claims Ping is “nothing like Facebook or Twitter”. Except it is. A bit.

We'll be honest, DIY towers contains more than its fair share of Apple fanboys and girls. We signed up this morning, and turned it off within five minutes, confused about exactly what it's supposed to give us that Twitter doesn't. Following anyone other than a few middle of the road bands and artists seemed to involve spamming our contacts' inboxes, and the whole thing felt about as anti-social as... erm... listening to our iPod.
