Jeff Buckley’s cover of ‘Hallelujah’ is heading for the number two slot in this week’s UK singles chart, after fans kick started a campaign to get the single to number one.The song is currently resting at number three in the midweek charts following several forum posts, groups and emails telling people to download the song.
The campaign came when it was revealed the X-Factor winner, Alexandra Burke would be releasing the song. She is currently holding the top spot, meaning this year’s Christmas chart one and two slots could be held by the same song. The original song, written and performed by Leonard Cohen in 1984, is also resting in the top 40 at number 34.
Buckley, who died at the age of 30 in 1997, completed only one album ‘Grace’, in which ‘Hallelujah’ is featured, however the song has been covered by many artists over the years, including Rufus Wainwright and John Cale.
