You may need a degree to understand the title.

The Fiery Furnaces The Fiery Furnaces' Matthew Friedberger is set to release a series of solo albums in 2011.

Entitled 'Solos' (we'll get to the reasoning shortly - it's not what you think - Ed), the records will be available via subscription, pre-order from label Thrill Jockey, and select partner stores. In the UK and Europe, that means Norman Records, Rough Trade East, Boomkat, Monorail and ANOST (Morr Music).

Friedberger will play only a single instrument on each album of the 6+2 set (though not necessarily the same actual individual example of the single given instrument), which is - and we quote…

"…designed to illustrate the following Cretan-Lacedaemonian principle. Every group of instruments against every other group of instruments; every instrument against every other instrument; and especially, every instrument against itself, all alone. See Laws, Book 1, 626 d. This idea jibes quite well with certain notions that have often been thought constitutively American, no doubt unfortunately. Friedberger thinks it therefore illuminating to apply this principle to such a pre-eminently American music as the aforementioned R-n-R. Despite the fact that this application is no doubt already ongoing."

Bloody obvious eh?

The first Solos album is called 'Napoleonette' and is set for release in January. The Fiery Furnaces are to record their ninth studio album before Christmas.
