A Genuine Freakshow Next week, Reading based seven-piece A Genuine Freakshow will release their new single 'Hopscotch Machine Gun Madness'.

The second single to be taken from their recent album, 'Oftentimes', it comes backed by a Bright Light Bright Light remix of album-sessions-offcut 'Our Bodies', and a live version of 'Luckmore Drive'.

Here, the band's violinist Marianne Casey Canning presents a playlist of Music To Speed-Write An Essay To. Her last suggestion is our favourite.

These Ghosts - Breathe In / Out

More chilled than any of their other tunes, but the energy and sweat in the live show is aplenty. Listen to just after sitting down and needing inspiration.

Thee More Shallows - Knight At The Knight School

Really reminds me of the tiny Casio keyboard my sister and I used to incessantly play Auld Lang Syne on.

M83 - We Own The Sky

Beautiful; a mini-break to sort your head out.

Gold Panda - Lonely Owl

...And then another tiny little mini-break to make tea and feel like you’re somewhere else.

Phantogram - Mouthful Of Diamonds

Reignite your writing juices with a sumptuous angel singing in your ear.

Wolfmother - Vagabond

Okay, I’ve had three-too-many teas and I’m starting feel it. Not too mental but there’s a rawness to the recording and vocals (which is planets away from the type of tracks I’ve been listening to for some time).

The Distillers - Ask The Angels

Massive love from when I first got into punk, no chilling here.

Sleigh Bells - Rill Rill

Saw these guys at Heaven and they owned it. A great song that makes me think of sunshine and glory.

Sleigh Bells - Treats

Just pure dirt, an amazing anthem. It’s 3AM and the end is nigh.

And over it all you run Rainymood.com for that ambient balm to drown out the ticking clock of thoughts of an impending deadline.
