Crocodiles found a few minutes to divulge their band van soundtrack
Posted 7th March 2011, 6:02pm in Soundtrack
Following their cancelled tour last year, Crocodiles have been working pretty hard behind the scenes to get back into their fans' good books. The duo have been touring almost continually since the announcement in October, and will be making their second UK appearance this year on 9th April 2011 to play at The Garage, London.
With latest single 'Mirrors' safely out of the way (read DIY's review here), and currently on the road with White Lies in Europe, Crocodiles found a few minutes to divulge their band van soundtrack.
Dim Stars - Monkey
This song is just beautiful. Richard Hell is in my top 3 lyricists and the opening line, "Oh my darling I was born when I met you/if you don't mind now what I'd like is can I get you to redesign and redeliver me again" really touches me.I think with true love a person goes through a very real shift, almost a rebirth, and Richard's lyrics perfectly capture that. Or maybe I'm just a sappy bastard.
John Cooper Clarke - I Wanna Be Yours
Another romantic one, albeit with much weirder and more clever lyrics than your standard love song. "Deep as the deep Atlantic Ocean/ That's how deep goes my emotion"- Clarke just has a way with words. He can take simple words and illusions and really spin something deep from it.
The Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance
Ridiculously fun American music from the early 60's.Bobby Fuller was heavily indebted to Buddy Holly but I think that one of his ears was also on what was happening in England at the time. The lyrics are sort of sad but the song is so poppy and fun you don't even notice.
Harmonia - Deluxe (Immer Wieder)
Perfect music for being on tour in Europe during the winter. It's been amazing driving around Scandinavia, snow blanketing everything as far as we can see, smoking some shit called "Laughing Buddha" we picked up in Amsterdam, zoning out as Harmonia's synthesizers bubble out of the van speakers. And since I don't understand a word they are saying, it frees me up to ignore the lyrics and really soak up the environment outside the window.
Patti Smith - Redondo Beach
Patti is a hero of ours. A true American artist ("And I have no regret!") who has exposed me to a lot of literature I now love. She is absolutely fearless, which I think should be the ultimate goal for any artist. She does whatever the fuck she wants, constantly reinvents herself and doesn't give a shit what people think about her. I really, really admire her.Redondo Beach is a great song about losing someone after having a fight and the regret and sadness that follows. To me, it serves as a reminder to not take things too seriously with the people I love.
