We get to know them that wee bit better.

Grand Archives

Chances are if you don't know of Grand Archives (though they're already two albums down, so really you should), you'll still know of some of the people in the band - notably Mat Brooke, formally of Band Of Horses.

The group are heading our way right now for a show in London tonight (get tickets here), the only UK date on their European stint touring their latest album 'Keep In Mind Frankenstein', and they're well worth checking out.

We get to know them that wee bit better by getting them to make up a list of their influences, from books to albums to films and tv shows.

Richard & Linda Thomson - I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight

This album is filled with these sinister love songs that have always intrigued me. 'The Calvary Cross' is filled with this eerie space between the notes that gives the song a real suspense.

Joe Versus The Volcano (Film)

If you can get past Tom Hanks this movie just might have the meaning of life buried in it somewhere. It's a simple story of a man who learns he has just weeks to live and embraces the idea that tomorrow will take care of itself. Hmmmm...

Elizabeth Cotton - Shake Sugaree

For fans of Karen Dalton. You basically just have to here this woman sing and a lot of things will just start to make sense.

Larry McMurty - Crazy Horse (Book)

A quick read about the life and time of Crazy Horse. Just another little reminder that Americans have quite a few things to be ashamed of.

Crazy Horse - Crazy Horse

Nothing fancy just honest rock music that never really got the credit it deserved beyond being Neil Young's backup band for a while.

Billy Joel - An Innocent Man

Purely a guilty pleasure, but the whole 'doo wop' back up singers thing can always lift my spirits. 'Uptown Girl' is a timeless classic if you ask me, though I'm sure not everyone would agree.

The Twilight Zone (TV Show)

It's always about wanting what you don't have until you get it, then all hell breaks loose and you wish you could just go back. Full of all sorts of little life lessons I think... maybe...

Calexico - Garden Ruin

I always admire the humble longevity of Calexico. Theirs is a blueprint worth subscribing to. So many amazing albums I can't say this is their best but it is up there. 'All Systems Red' has an urgency that you have to here to understand.

Graham Nash - Songs For Beginners

A classic album, from beginning to end. Once you've worn out all your csny records this gem is a great find.

America - America's Greatest Hits

Sometimes you don't have to overthink pop music. You just have to enjoy it.
