Neverever

Here's their Soundtrack, containing each member's 'Five Faves For Now'.

Neverever We love Neverever, and not just because their band name is similar to an All Saints single, and they themselves have songs called things like 'Coconut Shampoo', reminding us of (shock horror) Blink 182's 'Apple Shampoo' even though they sound nothing alike.

Anyway. The LA duo aren't actually similar to either of those bands (wouldn't it be odd if they were?), instead they slot nicely alongside the rest of Slumberland's roster, with a vintage take on summery-pop-with-an-edge.

Their debut LP, 'Angelic Swells', was released on CD a little while ago, and the vinyl has just come out this week. Here's their Soundtrack, containing each member's 'Five Faves For Now'.

Sandy Salisbury - Come Softly

Jihae: A psychedelic infused cover version of the Fleetwoods' Come Softly To Me, by way of those who brought you The Millennium and The Ballroom. A hauntingly beautiful yet simple song reworked with Sandy's sweet voice and Curt Boettcher's strangely modern, baroquey, sunshiney pop production. And it's got sound effects too! My fave!

Modern Folk Quartet - This Could Be the Night

Jihae: I'm not much into folk bands, but when this group went electric and got hold of P. Spector's attention, boy, did magic happen! Well, there was also a bit of help from Harry Nilsson who wrote the song, but the MFQ do quite a performance. Used for the opening theme tune to the Big T.N.T. Show (kind of like part 2 of the T.A.M.I. Show) and not much else, the song was never officially released. Pair it up with the footage of frantic teens running down the boulevards of L.A. (in the opening credits of the aforementioned show), and somehow it manages to get even more heart-explodingly amazing!

John Lennon produced by Phil Spector - Be My Baby

Jihae: Another golden combination, again involving the P.S. This cover is pretty much exactly what I wish our records could sound like. John Lennon's impersonation of Ronnie Spector is pretty great, which I don't think was appreciated by Phil in the slightest. Part of the dramatic Rock 'n' Roll sessions, this track wasn't released on anything until much later. The two of them sound like a real pair of a-holes in the studio together.

Sparks - Slowboat

Jihae: One of my all-time favorite Sparks Songs. From their first album, it's kind of different from most Sparks songs, a little more melancholy and heart-achey. I've always wanted to cover this and do a video for it. One time I met Russell Mael, my hands started shaking because there was a lot of awkward silence, he could tell and I wished a slowboat, or even a fast one, could "sail me far away" at that moment.

Kenny and the Cadets - Barbie

Jihae: This song was recorded by much of the pre-Capitol Beach Boys and mom Audree as a favor to family friends, the Morgans. Originally released on 'Randy' Records, it isn't written by Brian and didn't go very far, but it's a great little number with one of my favorite vocal performances of B. Wilson's. I just melt when I hear Brian's almost yelpy, puppy dog, teen croon waft over the innocent and elementary piano part.

The Fire Engines - Candyskin

Wallace: My old band got to play a few shows with the Fire Engines and they never played this song. When I told Davey I was disappointed he offered to sell me the rights to the song for a tenner. I thought he was joking and when I realized he wasn't, he was nowhere to be found.

Brett Smiley - I Can't Help Myself / Over the Rainbow

Wallace: Finally together, Motown/the Wizard of Oz/Andrew Loog Oldham and a seventeen year old in a salmon suit. The whole album is amazing as is his performance on the Russell Harty show.

The Feelies - Raised Eyebrows

Wallace: I have been listening to this so much since the reissue came out. I really love how its power pop/post punk wonky fun times. Kinda sick of 'dark' music. Too many bad vibes, man...

Simon Turner - I've Been a Bad, Bad Boy

Wallace: I got Jihae a Simon Turner poster for christmas and my mum totally remembered him. I was well impressed!

The Soft Boys - Tonight

Wallace: I love this song soooo much really, really want to cover it.
