Sunderbans Sheffield / London trio Sunderbans are one of Young & Lost Club's latest signings, and the label will be putting out their debut single 'We Only Can Because We Care' on 8th March.

The band formed when Chris Hutchinson (vocals, bass) and Maurice Day (vocals, guitar) met in Sheffield (the former was performing as a one-man-band); they moved to London and soon completed their line up with Dave Canning (vocals, drums).

Keen to give us a bit more insight into the music they love, the two founding members, Chris and Maurice, give us a rundown of their soundtrack.

Love - Alone Again Or

Chris: The ideal opener to any play list, with an acoustic guitar line that gradually draws you into the waves of vocal melody. It is as if the two are being blown around on the breeze. A truly wonderful pop song.

Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot

Chris: This song encompasses everything we believe music should be. Imaginative, non-formulaic, beautiful, warm, pop, loud, quiet…

Envelopes - Boat

Maurice: Henrik Orrling - our favourite Swede - produced our single and has since been a massive inspiration to us. He described to us how his bandmate Audrey Pic couldn’t pick the guitar strings quick enough on this song - the result being a kind of fuzzy, warm, tumbling sound throughout. It’s a gentle and sad song.

Arcade Fire - Neighbourhood # 2 (Laika)

Chris: Arcade Fire made me fall in love with guitar music all over again. Watching them in a packed Leadmill (Sheffield) was probably the best gig I have ever been too. I shook my head so hard it made me dizzy. In my opinion this is Arcade Fire at their finest.

Talking Heads - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)

Chris: ‘This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)’ reminds me of being drunk, happy and jumping around in our old flat in Sheffield with the closest of friends.

Simon and Garfunkel - America

Maurice: Listening to Simon and Garfunkel in the back of my parents’ car is one of my earliest memories. I read once that they used to stand, noses-tips touching, and sing into each other’s faces for hours on end, to perfect their harmonies. What an image?

Eels - It’s A Motherfucker

Chris: I bought the Eels first album ‘Beautiful Freak’ when I was about 12 and it was pretty much the only album I listened to for the following 3 years. The first gig I took my little brother to see was Eels, it can only really go down hill from there. Mark ‘E’ Everett has defined my music taste for as long as I can remember, it’s a motherfucker!

Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened

Maurice: This song is breathless. It builds layer by long layer into a crescendo that seems to never end. It’s an ambitious and brilliant structure that reflects how good this band really are.

Liars - The Otherside of MT Heart Attack

Maurice: The strength of this song lies in its desert-like sparseness. The absence of the overdubs and excess noises provides space for the ringing guitar melody which melts into Angus Andrew’s vocal. It’s the perfect song to listen to before going to sleep and to end our list.
