Woodpigeon Woodpigeon are going to release their new single, the second to be taken from their new album 'Treasury Library Canada' (pick up a copy here), entitled 'Cities Of Weather' on 18th May. The release will coincide with a UK tour, dates for which can be found on their MySpace. Frontman Mark Hamilton tells us about a selection of tracks that have soundtracked his life.

Beth Jeans Houghton - Golden

I've been in love with Beth's music since I met her on one of our last tours overseas. 'Golden' has been on repeat in my head since I first heard her sing it, and on our last trip over we even recorded a song together late at night in the cafe where she works.

The Kinks - Autumn Almanac

I ride my bicycle to work at the library every day when not recording or on tour, listening to my ipod on shuffle. There's a lot of Kinks on there, but I'm surprised at how often I forget how perfect and myriad a song like 'Autumn Almanac' actually is when it comes up out of the blue, as it did earlier today.

Deerhunter - Cavalry Scars II / Aux Out

Something about Bradford Cox's 'aaaahs' over the two chord change that rounds out the song before it kicks into overdrive sounds like musical perfection to me. I love how Deerhunter often sound like they're nearly coming off the rails, but it's all so put together.

ABBA - Lay All Your Love on Me

If I ever come close to writing a minor 7th chorus as good as this one, I'll retire a happy man. It's a song I can play over and over without ever becoming bored with it.

Hoagy Carmichael - Stardust

I once read Thom Yorke stating that if he could have written any song in history it would have been 'There is a Light That Never Goes Out'. To me, 'Stardust' is that song.

BRAIDS - Of People

BRAIDS are a young band formerly of Calgary (where we knew them as The Neighbourhood Council), now living in Montreal. They're so good that when they opened for Deerhunter last summer (as the first band on a four-band bill, mind), they received a standing theatre ovation and were called out for an encore. Definitely worth keeping an eye on these kids.
