The kind folk at HBO have released seventeen new images from Game of Thrones Season 2, with our first close-up glimpse of some of the new characters.

Readers of George R.R. Martin’s books have been eagerly awaiting a look at the Brienne of Tarth, the maiden trained as a knight and sworn to protect Renly Baratheon on his quest to seize the Iron Throne. Brienne is played by 6ft 3” actress Gwendolin Christie.

The images also show Stephen Dillane as Renly’s brother and rival for the throne, Stannis alongside his priestess, the powerful and somewhat sinister Melisandre (Carice van Houten). Irish actor Liam Cunningham is Davos Seaworth “the Onion Knight,” loyal to Stannis and suspicious of Melisandre.

Patrick Malahide joins the cast as Lord Balon Greyjoy, the cold father of Alfie Allen’s character Theon Greyjoy, ward of Eddard Stark in Season One.

Rounding up the images are a rather frightened looking Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Michelle Fairley as her mother Catelyn Stark, the crippled Bran Stark (Issac Hempstead Wright) being carried by his large stable boy Hodor (Kristian Nairn), Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, The King in The North Robb Stark (Richard Madden), Jon Snow (Kit Harington) now beyond The Wall and searching for his uncle Benjen Stark, the award winning Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Lena Headey as the duplicitous and ambitious Cersei Lannister, King Joffrey Baratheon (the brilliantly sneery Jack Gleeson) looking regal, Gethin Anthony as Renly, a bedraggled Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy.

Game of Thrones Season 2 will air on HBO in the US on April 1st with Sky Atlantic broadcasting a mere 24 hours later on April 2nd.
