In what can only be described as bizarre news, US network ABC and ABC Studios are proceeding with a remake of BBC classic comedy, Only Fools and Horses and have cast Romeo + Juliet actor John Leguizamo in the iconic role of Derek "Delboy" Trotter Deadline report.

The pilot has been written by Scrubs' Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley who will executive produce with Jeff Golenberg who happens to be Leguizamo's manager.

National treasure and original Delboy David Jason has expressed his doubts about the remake saying, "The language will have to change so much and there will be so many parts of the storyline you have to change. It's so London and so British, [in] its humour, that you wonder. It's London based and it took quite a long time for the rest of the country to catch up with the phrases. I have no idea what the American equivalent of 'plonker' is, for example. Or 'dipstick'."

Judging by the synopsis released by the network the US version will stick heavily to the originals premise; "based on the iconic British series, this classic comedy chronicles the misadventures of two streetwise brothers and their ageing grandfather as they concoct outrageous, morally questionable get rich quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires."

Despite the seemingly odd choice of leading man it has to be said that Leguizamo is a versatile performer and after catching his one man show - Ghetto Klown - last year in London we can vouch for his impressive comic timing.
