The CW have cast Smallville and Chuck star Kristin Kreuk in the female lead for their new take on Beauty and the Beast, Deadline report.
This version is loosely based on the fondly remembered 1980s series of the same name starring Sons of Anarchy’s Ron Perlman as Vincent - the Beast - and Terminator star Linda Hamilton as the Beauty of the title, Catherine.
The pilot is described as “a modern- day romantic love story with a procedural twist.” Kreuk will play Catherine, an NYPD homicide detective traumatised by the murder of her mother nine years previously. Witnessing the murder, Catherine also saw the death of the killer at the hands of a Beast - Vincent Koslow - the survivor of a military experiment. Eventually the two team up and, well, you can guess the rest.
Gary Felder (Kiss the Girls) will direct the pilot which has been written by Brothers and Sisters writers Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper, who also executive produce alongside Bill Haber, creator of the 1980s series Ron Koslow, and original series producers Paul Junger Witt and C. Anthony Thomas.
Kreuk is best known to audiences for her long running role as Lana Lang in Smallville and interestingly played another fairytale character in the TV film Snow White opposite Miranda Richardson, Vera Farmiga and Clancy Brown.
