To celebrate the release of their new single 'Bible Thumper' (pick it up here), Solid Gold's Zach Coulter has given us a run through of the band's new album 'Bodies Of Water', which will be released later in the year (but can currently be picked up at Rough Trade on import.)1. 'New Kanada'
This was a reworking of an old idea. I wrote the first parts on a guitar, and the outro Matt wrote on an old organ. The lyrics reference some sort of apocalypse, which I enjoy writing about. This was the most challenging beat I wrote... I think both for us and the listener. Weird samples.
2. 'Armoured Cars'
I wrote the song on a guitar, then we all added the neccessary bits to make it a thick tune. Matt's keys and Adam's bass are definately my favorite things on this. I also enjoy the outro beat where Shon's slide comes through.
3. 'Get Over It'
We have written a lot on vintage organs from the 70's and 80's. The period where analog first met digital intrigues us. Matt wrote a two chord progression on our organ, which started the idea. I then added the hook line and wrote a song around it, dealing with three different issues. Adam the lent his amazing bass line, we added some overdubs and it was done. We are very proud of this tune.
4. 'Bible Thumper'
Adam started this one off by playing a riff on gtar while we were hanging with my kids. I heard it and loved it so I wrote some chords around it. I then reversed, slowed down, and chopped up a vocal sample for the beat. Weird is good. Matt's key line is the shit.
5. 'Calm Down'
Another old idea. I started re-playing this at my Mom's on her piano. She liked it and said to record it. I make it a habit to listen to her. I love the strings.
6. 'Neon Rose'
Wrote it on guitar. I liked the way the riff worked against the simple chord structure. Our friend Varun played percussion on this and a few other tracks. He is amazing.
7. 'Those Who Go'
This initially had lyrics and a melody, which we liked but in the end didn't fit with the rest of the record... it was a bit to aggressive in its tone. Again, Adam's bass just destroys.
8. 'Synchronize'
This is a great example of how the three of us write together. I wrote the initial song on guitar with a different melody and structure. Adam took that apart, starting with a bassline and then adding a couple key lines. Matt filled it out with the trippy pads that start the song and give it its inital feeling. I changed the melody, added some keys and a chord change and we ended up with a wicked tune. It just happened to take six months.
9. 'Just Like Everyone Else'
Very depressing subject matter that I think we put to music well. This was another reworking of an old tune. We slowed it down and set it to piano, then a a string player play the guitar melody. This is the one track that someone else helps with backing vox, which adds a ghostly touch.
10. 'Who You Gonna Run To'
Again, our organs come through. Matt started this for a station ID for our local radio station. We then turned it into a song, with Matt and Adam writing the beat. Another sick bassline, some more sick keys and a melody. I like the end when all the parts are blaring together. Good end to a record I think.
