Bell X1 have defined the art of demonstrating witty dialog, infectious hooks and catchy one liners on many releases. Four albums in and 'The Great Defector' encapsules all said elements quite effortlessly resulting in an excellent lead single from 'Blue Lights On The Runway'. This Irish quartet, it's fair to say, have gained a somewhat underground following in the UK as opposed to topping charts, smashing record sales and causing gig pandemonium on their home turf. Although, it must be noted that a dedicated fan base is rapidly building. 'The Great Defector' opens with an immediate nod to Talking Heads, a sufficient amount that praises Bell X1's creativity rather than slapping it with a cheap attempt at a David Byrne rip off. All the elements that hallmark these Kildare boys beam from 'The Great Defector' and it’s not long before Noonan demonstrates his fine use of a metaphor.

Glitchy guitar solos dominate this catchy indie-pop number and with a reference to John Steinbecks' 'Of Mice and Men' really spurs the toe tapping to the randomness of dialog.
"You're the chocolate at the end of my cornetto" furthermore demonstrates Noonan's witty use of wordplay, enough to provide a schoolgirl blush.

Infectiousness at it’s core 'The Great Defector' is Bell X1 doing what they do best, providing feel good catchy tracks that snap crackle and pop with all their might. Rating: 7/10
