"I'm ready to owe you anything". Just what Bombay Bicycle Club mean with the hook - for it is the repeated rendition of this very line which constitutes the most memorable, and best moment of this track - isn't precisely clear, and that can only be A Good Thing. A slightly wordy apology? The admission that you're just about to fall in love? Whatever they mean - and, by default whatever you take from 'Evening', it's probably worth remembering that it's incredibly profound a statement for such young boys.Like The Maccabees, just with a better sense of melody and less of the irritating smugness, 'Evening' is a simple, jolly indie-pop effort, not even attempting to break any of the rules in the book, let alone re-write them. And it's all the better for it: confident in its own infectiousness - and believe us, you'll be singing that line in the shower for ooh, days to come - somewhat deceptively, it's as clever as boys-with-guitars can get. Unless you're Vampire Weekend, one imagines.
