D/R/U/G/S - Connected
Single Reviews

‘Connected’ is perfect for winding down after a long day.

Label: Tender Age
Reviewer: Heather McDaid
While D/R/U/G/S finds himself openly appreciated for his more melodic, light trance infused musical insights, it can admittedly feel somewhat subdued in comparison to many. In fact, comparing his newest release ‘Connected’ to ‘Love/Lust’ – his offering from earlier this year - would result in the same note on a slightly diminished scale; whether this is more favourable is naturally based on personal preference.

These three tracks aren’t instantaneously grabbing; it does require repetitive listens to acquaint yourself fully. Progressing in quality through this release, the final number – the 7 minute 15 second ‘Unified Field’ – seems unequivocally the most enjoyable and interesting of the trio. There is a succinct outline to his music: strict beats, limited instrumental fluctuations and the occasional airy spoken word and, in turn, the tracks work together seamlessly.

D/R/U/G/S is not overtly brash in his decisions and although a few listens can mark an improvement on the first listen, ‘Connected’ does lack a certain sense of adventure and diversity. In a twist from the more radio-friendly numbers available today – i.e harsh beats and thick lyrical overlays – he takes a more relaxed and gentle approach. There does appear to be that evident influence from the trends of the 1990s but with enough mix to present it as a current day experimentation, something undeniably attractive and easy on the ear.

‘Connected’ is perfect for winding down after a long day, with simplicity being a core element in his sound, yet it is far from pushing boundaries in terms of musicality.
