David’s Lyre - Tear Them Down

Everything is there, but not quite in the right place or the right order.

The debut offering from masked one man band David’s Lyre is an interesting offering. The Mancunian gifts us with another ‘indie’ voice, with its slightly whiney twang, and some less than amazing lyrics, but manages to build a song with infectious lines and an altogether well composed piece of music.

While the lyrics are slightly abstract and ever so slightly cliche, they somehow work: not quite poetic and not quite poignant, they’re just a collection of overused imagery, but the chorus line of “The King is dead / Long live the King”, along with its high paced backing, will be in your head for days.

I wouldn’t disbelieve someone if they said this was a very early song by Friendly Fires, before they got they got the electronic style. Ok, so I’d be sceptical, but bits in here sound like a prototype of the band. Basically what we end up with is a track that sounds like potential: everything is there, but not quite in the right place or the right order. Rating: 7/10
