Dirty Projectors - As I Went Out One Morning

Dirty Projectors - As I Went Out One Morning
Single Reviews

It’s a Dylan song alright, but it has some of that Longstreth brilliance.

Let me tell you now - I am fucking sick of Bob Dylan covers. The man (up until 1975 at least) was a lyrical genius and a musical god, so listening to yet another cover of 'Like A Rolling Stone' by yet another wannabe band makes me fume. That said, there are now two good modern covers that I’d gladly share with the world; the first is The Tallest Man On Earth covering 'I Want You' for Daytrotter, and the second is Dirty Projectors covering 'As I Went Out One Morning'.

Dirty Projectors have been successful in covering the mighty Dylan by not falling into that age old trap of trying to sound identical. It’s a Dylan song alright, but it has some of that Longstreth brilliance (read: Longstreth post 'The Glad Fact'). It’s got the whimsical voices, the charm and the classical style brilliance. It’s a song that could be played to someone in the street who had no idea what was on and they’d love it; it’s not simply a completist’s dream, it’s a music lover’s dream.

The B side is 'No Intention', one of the finest points off of the fine album 'Bitte Orca'. Not a rareity, but a great song nonetheless and one that will compliment 'As I Went Out' perfectly on the flip side of a 7”. Highly recommended.
