When a band names themselves after an undertaker in the Dylan Thomas play Under Milk Wood, and releases a song based on and named after 1984’s grim BBC docudrama Threads, you can’t help but sit up and take notice. Evans The Death are an intelligent band, and newest single ‘Telling Lies’ is further proof of that fact.

Signed to Fortuna POP!, making them labelmates with the likes of The Pain Of Being Pure At Heart, their sound is unmistakably indie-pop at its heart, although influences such as My Bloody Valentine shine through in the scuzzy guitar work and echoing vocals. Katherine Whitaker’s powerful vocals are reminiscent of The Long Blondes, whilst lyrics like “There’s no pretty way to tell a lie / It’s only ever hard to say goodbye / when it’s someone you like” are so clever that it’s hard to imagine them coming from such a young band.

With a debut album due this year, ‘Telling Lies’ is a lovely stop-gap between first single ‘Threads’ and whatever comes next. Rating: 8/10
