Fan Death - Veronica’s Veil

Single Reviews

There is a beast waiting to escape, as of yet it can’t quite manage.

Fan Death - Veronica’s Veil Fan Death’s debut ‘Veronica’s Veil’ opens with a few bars of Saturday Night Fever-esque string grooves that are without doubt the star of the show, but well before the vocals kick in even the blandest of musical palettes will have deciphered the doom-laden synth pop that awaits. You would be forgiven for thinking that a reference to the relic used to mop Jesus’ brow might not be the most obvious of subjects of what is essentially a disco track, but this track is an understated, slow-burning gem to wind the night down with. The vocals are hauntingly absent for the most part and rather than providing the kick they drag the record into a troubled Rapture like loop. The refrain of “I think I can believe now” sounds suitably trapped, which is very much the story of this record. There is a beast waiting to escape, as of yet it can’t quite manage. Rating: 7/10
