Grammatics - Shadow Committee

Single Reviews

Grandiose and cerebral the single is a fascinating listen.

Dance To The Radio, 15th March 2009 / By Lee White
Grammatics - Shadow Committee Despite the slap to the face with an orchestra that is the sudden opening to the single edit of 'Shadow Committee', the latest single from the Leeds guys and girl is anything but instantaneous. Grandiose and cerebral the single is a fascinating listen and will give great pleasure to those that like to put effort into enjoying music.

The style of the vocals may be too strained and soaring for some, but as with all of Grammatics output so far, after several listens the beauty of the song is revelled. What on first listen appears to be a somewhat pretentious and impenetrable wall of sound is revealed to be a swirling chamber pop song, with huge cinematic qualities. Furthermore we love the fact that this band have a cello player as one of their number and this song is further proof that rather than being a kooky addition to the group we have an element that is integral to the sound.

We can also attest to Grammatics strong live performances that manage to carry across songs such as these, yet we can also state that being so individual means that there'll likely be no crossover into the mainstream. This is one to keep to ourselves, but a good one it is.
