Electronics maestro Max Tundra has been hiding himself away for the past six years since the release of his last album in 2002. Luckily for all fans of his lopsided, surreal take on music, he’s due to release a brand new album in October, and ‘Will Get Fooled Again’ is the first single to be lifted from it.
Skipping along at a rate custom-made to induce palpitations, the track is barely able to contain itself, like a pressure cooker about to explode twenty feet into the air. It starts off with a lone jangly guitar before the skittery, broken rhythm crashes in and does its best to keep tripping you up. Just when you think you might be regaining your balance, the tempo speeds up ‘til you pass warp speed and a swirly organ melody makes you feel like you might be losing your marbles (which is surely always a good thing when listening to a record). The track is sung at breakneck speed and is a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of falling in love with unsuitable girls on the internet – and if this frenzied, fabulous mishmash is the outcome you’re left feeling grateful that Max is going through it so you don’t have to.
To let Max Tundra loose on your ears is like submitting to the thrill of a white-knuckle rollercoaster ride - you know you’re going to feel totally giddy and possibly a little queasy but it’s always worth it for the incredible, head-spinning adrenaline rush.
