Despite Skint & Demoralised being touted as “Soul street poets” in the vein of John Cooper Clarke, 'The Thrill of Thirty Seconds' is actually a pretty traditional Indie tune. Jogging along nicely to some cheeky 7th chords this song could quite comfortably be The Kooks if they were reading aloud from 'The Road to Wigan Pier'. Unfortunately, this song is somewhat marred by “that accent”.
The generic and smug voice, which appears on Pigeon Detectives, Kooks, Scouting for Girls and Rumble Strips records, and for some reason accentuates vowels long past their sell by date. “Actuaaaalllyyy” there is no “neeeed” for it. I wonder if it is a button that producers hit in the studio that hits frequencies only A & R men can hear! It is a shame because aside from this affectation the words are pretty good and this is a fairly inoffensive if inessential single release.
