The Aliens - Magic Man

The Aliens are treading dangerously thin creative ground – to be frank, ‘Magic Man’ sounds like a fairly accomplished Oasis covers band covering the Beatles. This first track to be taken from their latest album ‘Luna’ is full of swirly, psychedelic harmonies, distorted Gallagher-esque vocals and a deeply dodgy guitar solo last heard played by your 15 year old wannabe rockstar brother endlessly in his bedroom. As you can imagine, all these elements add up to a disappointingly stodgy and lumpy listening experience. And the lyrics are hardly going to ignite passion in your heart or fire in your belly, either (check out these gems: “Follow the sun / You can follow the sun” and “Anywhere you want to go / You can come and let me know”) – all slightly hippy-ish and trippy without actually saying anything about anything very much.
If ‘Magic Man’ is bearable it’s because it all sounds vaguely familiar, in a sweet, non-specific 60s way and the rhythm mooches along at a pleasantly shuffling pace - but you’ve got ask yourself: is this really enough from any band?
