White Stripes wannabe’s or genuine contenders for the garage-blues throne? The fourth single release from album ‘Attack and Release’ pushes Black Keys further towards the latter - but there’s no doubting where their roots lie. What’s clear from the start is that this isn’t your average ‘Keys two minute window rattler. It’s got the finger prints of uber producer Danger Mouse all over it, from the fuzzed up and funky guitar riff to the soulful Gnarls Barkeley-esque vocals. Think of previous release ‘Thickfreakness’ cross-bred with the new Bond tune and you wouldn’t be far off. The more polished sound will no doubt have fans of rawer early material up in arms, but this is a considered step away from the monotomy trap that so many bands fall into.
The ‘Same Old Thing’? Quite the opposite, and The Black Keys are all the better for it.
