The Rakes - That’s The Reason
Single ReviewsA safe, rather than exciting, choice of single.
V2, 1st June 2009 / By Phil South
When The Rakes decamped to Berlin to record third album ‘Klang’, you wondered what kind of album they were going to produce - ear splitting techno? Kraftwerkian electro? Oompah? Thankfully, they reverted to, and slightly tweaked, the formula of debut album ‘Capture/Release’ which so far has produced two singles - the excellent ‘1989’ and now the catchy pop punk of ‘That’s The Reason’.Alan Donohoe’s lyrical delivery borders on manic at the best of times and he’s in suitably erratic form throughout, wailing and crooning over sharp, wiry guitar lines and a vice tight rhythm section. The chorus is repetitive, which can be a dangerous ploy, but melodic enough not to grate.
While it’s certainly not a bad track, it’s probably the most straight forward 2 mins 45 on the album. A safe, rather than exciting, choice of single.
