The Spills – I’m Scared I Might
Calling Wakefield’s The Spills raucous, high octane music indie-rock might throw some people off, the emphasis here really is on the rock element, and that’s unsurprising given they recorded this single with James Kenosha, who’s worked with fellow noise-fiends Pulled Apart By Horses and Dinosaur Pile-Up.
Undulating riffs, crash cymbals and a spasmodic guitar solo outro are what make 'I’m Scared I Might' what it is, and it’s only the introspective lyrics and vocals that anchors this in the indie camp. But even these elements are pushed out of their comfort zone as the initially Ryan Jarman-esque drawl gets pushed into a shrill scream for the chorus and the already noisy instruments are pushed into stereo-splitting territory, whilst the quiet lulls in the song serve only to allow for more buildup.
It’s all very energetic, but there’s little here that really screams (pardon the pun) of originiality or invention, but perhaps that’s not the point. The band have been making a stir in the Leeds and Wakefield live scene, and that seems the best arena for this track – a crowd of sweaty moshers would justify all the noise.
