The Standards - Out Of The Fire
Yikes! Somebody's tired. The Standards' rather bland effort, 'Out Of The Fire', is very, very uninspiring indie. As a genre plagued by a glut of bands, and a glut of aspiring artists, it can therefore demand of its success a massive degree of crispness, of coolness, which The Standards utterly fail to achieve.
Something about the track just oozes a lack of energy, which is brilliantly exemplified by the chorus. That melody. Those words. That voice quality. It's so bland, and delivered with such boredom it almost seems a parody.
Indie needs to be young, fresh, elegant, and beautiful. It's a commercial genre, belonging largely to the young consumer, and therefore necessitates a very well directed enthusiasm and an extremely particular type of charisma which is strikingly absent on this track.
What the fuck is this? It's exhausted. It's worn out before it's even gone anywhere. It's lacking more than it has. The extent to which it reeks of recent, shit Morrissey albums, is so overpowering it can't escape even the briefest of reviews. How can you be so boring?
