Twin Sister - All Around And Away We Go
Single Reviews

The song unfurls into a psychedelic pop gem.

The next sentence will require a leap of faith. ‘All Around And Away We Go’ sounds like Diana Vickers fronting Saint Etienne. Still with us? It’s worth staying, because initial impressions only scratch a vague disco surface while the song unfurls into a psychedelic pop gem, shimmering and sparkling, so light you daren’t breathe too heavily for fear it’ll fall over.

It’s the standout track from this Long Island five-piece’s second EP ‘Color Your Life’, which came out in the US earlier this year. Their debut ‘Vampires With Dreaming Kids’ – another EP – appeared online in 2008, but only now have the pair received a full UK release, giving us the chance to track their progress in one sitting. Overall, the Twin Sister sound draws on well-worn 80s shoegaze touchstones like Cocteau Twins and Galaxie 500, shakily rooted in drifting dreamscapes, but ‘All Around And Away We Go’ reveals a tighter core, daring to feed Chic through a misty gauze.

For all the focused pop sensibility however, there’s no escaping the fanciful: “Resurrected, sharing white bread / Under purple-blue blossoms,” coos Andrea Estella, veering dangerously close to “Hello, trees! Hello, sky!” territory, but you can forgive the twee cushion covers when the upholstery’s this divine.
