First OnSingle Reviews

Think early Beach Boys crossed with The Ramones.

This year has seen a proliferation of bands aping the grungy melodic guitar rock of the early nineties; however, Margate’s Two Wounded Birds are influenced by a much earlier rock n roll sound.

Think early Beach Boys crossed with The Ramones: Two Wounded Birds make energetic, fuzzed up, sixties inspired rock n roll. It’s no doubt very derivative, but there is a good deal of charm in fabulously named singer Johnny Danger’s feverish delivery. The guitars twang in that very distinctive surf pop style and it has a killer key change, which is always a good thing.

You do get the feeling however, that in order to be really successful they will need to move forward in some way. B-side ‘I Think The World Of You’ does do something a little bit different, and its darker piano based sound may, indeed, be a future blueprint.

Whether or not they are able to adapt and develop is debatable, but there is certainly a refreshing purity here and, while it does absolutely nothing new, it never fails to put a smile on your face.
